The Ming Tombs are the final resting place of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Located in Changping District, about 50 kilometers north of Beijing, the tombs are set in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains.
The most famous is the Changling Tomb, known for its grand architecture and historical significance. It is the largest and best-preserved tomb among the Ming Tombs, housing the remains of the third Ming emperor, Yongle. Other notable tombs include the Dingling Tomb, the only one that has been excavated, and the Zhaoling Tomb, known for its exquisite stone carvings.
The Ming Tombs cover an area of 120 square kilometers and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. They are a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of Ming Dynasty architecture and burial customs.
The Ming Tombs are best explored by following a route that covers the main tombs and historical sites. Start at the Spirit Way (Shen Dao), a 7-kilometer road lined with stone statues of animals and officials, and proceed to the main tombs.
