The Ming Tombs are the final resting place of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Located in Changping District, about 50 kilometers north of Beijing, the tombs are set in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains.

The most famous is the Changling Tomb, known for its grand architecture and historical significance. It is the largest and best-preserved tomb among the Ming Tombs, housing the remains of the third Ming emperor, Yongle. Other notable tombs include the Dingling Tomb, the only one that has been excavated, and the Zhaoling Tomb, known for its exquisite stone carvings.

The Ming Tombs cover an area of 120 square kilometers and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. They are a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of Ming Dynasty architecture and burial customs.

Recommended Tour Route

The Ming Tombs are best explored by following a route that covers the main tombs and historical sites. Start at the Spirit Way (Shen Dao), a 7-kilometer road lined with stone statues of animals and officials, and proceed to the main tombs.

Key attractions include the Changling Tomb, the largest and best-preserved tomb, the Dingling Tomb, the only one that has been excavated and open to the public, and the Zhaoling Tomb, known for its exquisite stone carvings.

Don't miss the Ming Tombs Museum, which features exhibits about the history and culture of the Ming Dynasty, and the Spirit Way, which is lined with 18 pairs of stone statues including lions, elephants, and officials.

  • Tickets can also be purchased at the entrance, but advance booking is recommended to avoid long queues.
